Met Gala Co-chair JLo, 54, Sparks Debate with Her Look: From ‘Messy Bun’ to Not a ‘Decent’ Gown

Yesterday, Tinseltown stars came out to play at one of the biggest fashion events in the industry. The esteemed 2024 Met Gala saw numerous celebrities, including Jennifer Lopez, dressed to the nines to celebrate this year’s theme: “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Attending as one of the co-chairs of the Spring 2024 exhibit, the 54-year-old was a show-stopper while posing for pictures at the event. Lopez wore a gorgeous, slightly sheer couture gown designed by the iconic fashion house of Schiaparelli, which was adorned with crystal embellishments and showcased her curvy figure.

She complemented her ensemble with pristine silver jewels including dangling earrings, rings, and an extravagant diamond necklace. With the beautiful dress as her look’s main focal point, Lopez opted for neutral makeup.

Lopez used a combination of brown, pink, and caramel tones, and cheekbone bronzer with glossy lips. Complementing the look, she fashioned her hair into a top knot bun, leaving only a few wisps of hair loose to frame her face. The “Can’t Get Enough” artist’s appearance garnered a lot of attention from the public.

“The hair and makeup is terrible! She looks tired,” wrote an unimpressed social media user. In response to this comment, another person said, “It looks like she tossed up a messy bun after a day at the beach.”

Similarly, someone on Facebook commented, “Love the dress but this looks like my everyday mom bun 😂.” Continuing to criticize her hair and makeup, another user expressed, “That highlighter on the inner eyes is only highlighting the wrinkles under her eyes! First time I’ve ever noticed them. She has great makeup artists so????”

“Lookin like Jenny did her own hair and makeup […] too old for see thru,” reprimanded a social media user. “What’s going on with the hair? Love everything else,” pondered another person.

Commenting on her dress, someone else chastised, “She’s beautiful but dress decent it’s getting old and so is she, wonder what her kids will think when [they are] older.” Referring to Lopez’s overall look, another simply noted, “No class,” while someone else stated, “That neck don’t lie.”

Although many criticized Lopez’s appearance, what may not be appreciated is the amount of work that went into its conception. According to fashion designer Mariel Haenn, the star’s gown “took over 800 hours of work” to make.

Designed by using four enlarged butterfly wings to make up the dress’ entire surface area, in addition to using “2,500,000 silver foil bugle beads,” the inspiration behind the dress was the butterfly.

“Much more than flowers, the butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis. Transformation. Something that was asleep that wakes up beautiful, powerful, and new. The butterfly is a perfect articulation of a sleeping beauty,” Haenn explained.

As for Lopez’s hair and makeup, a fashion outlet profiling the Met Gala looks reported that the idea was to prove that less is more, especially when one is already dazzling in a Schiaparelli haute couture piece.

Of her hair, celebrity hairstylist Lorenzo Martin divulged, “Just like a butterfly, we wanted the hair to be angelic, fresh, and beautiful.” To achieve the desired hair, Martin used the Shark FlexStyle Sparkle Air Styling & Drying System in Black Diamond, the Tangle Teezer Ultimate Styler, and Tresemme Extra Hold Hair Spray.

In addition to her stunning Tiffany and Co. jewelry, Lopez accessorized her look with beautiful nails done by Tom Bachik. On how he brought her nails to life, Bachik disclosed, “Like a butterfly transforming in a shimmery chrysalis, I encased Jen’s polished natural nail in a translucent pearl cocoon.”

Of her attendance as a co-host at the Met, the butterfly star, who has been to the fashion extravaganza a series of ten times before, mentioned that she felt “honored.” “I was really honored to be asked to host it alongside Zendaya and Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth. Anna was gracious enough to ask me,” Lopez gushed.

Noticeably absent from Lopez’s side as she dominated the red carpet while taking pictures, was her dashing beau Ben Affleck, 51. As for why the famous actor did not attend the event with his wife this year, a media outlet confirmed that though he had planned on joining Jennifer Lopez, he could not.

The outlet stated that as a result of a conflict with his schedule, Affleck was unable to make the Gala. Reportedly, the “Good Will Hunting” actor is currently filming “The Accountant 2” in Los Angeles.

Although the “Gone Girl” talent was not seen at this year’s Met Gala, he was recently seen roasting NFL icon Tom Brady at his comedy roast event. Affleck’s appearance sparked a heated stir online.

While at Brady’s Comedy Central Roast, Affleck garnered many fan comments expressing shock. A TikTok clip circulating from the event showed him delivering his lines with the caption “@Ben Affleck are you ok?” raising immediate concern among fans. Adding to the stir, Dov Kleiman, a prominent NFL journalist, took to X to express his dismay.

Kleiman posted a video of Affleck with the blunt caption, “Ben Affleck was AWFUL.” The viral reactions quickly shifted from his performance to his physical appearance with numerous comments highlighting his seemingly altered visage.

Social media platforms, particularly X and TikTok, became hotbeds for speculation and commentary. The reactions ranged from puzzled to outright alarmed. Several comments stood out, capturing the essence of the public’s reaction.

The intense scrutiny of Affleck’s appearance at the roast isn’t entirely without precedence. Michael Bay, the director of “Armageddon,” once revealed some fascinating details about Affleck’s cosmetic alterations for his role in the film.

Bay shared, “We paid for a set of $20,000 pearly white teeth.” He elaborated on the pressure he and producer Jerry Bruckheimer placed on Affleck to modify his looks to suit the camera’s demands.

He described how he preferred low camera angles to give a heroic effect, but Affleck’s “baby teeth” were a concern. Bay elaborated, “So I told Jerry Bruckheimer, ‘[…] he’s got these baby teeth, Jerry, I don’t know what to do!'” This then led to Affleck spending extensive time in a dentist’s chair.

While speculation about recent changes to Affleck’s appearance has been rife, the actor himself has only confirmed undergoing dental work. However, during the production of “Armageddon,” Affleck was subjected to more than just dental modifications.

In interviews, he recounted how Bay and Bruckheimer insisted on aesthetic perfection. They pushed him towards tanning beds and rigorous physical workouts to cultivate a more traditionally “sexy” image.

Affleck reflected, “Yes! And I was a little naive about the opinions people would form about me. Or Michael [Bay] and Jerry [Bruckheimer]’s focus on aesthetics, like, ‘You guys gotta go to the tanning bed!’ They made me fix my teeth and work out and be sexy,” he explained.
