Katie Ledecky, known for her remarkable swimming career, became the most decorated U.S. female Olympian at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Yet, her journey took a turn when she was diagnosed with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) after the 2015 World Aquatics Championships.
Initially dismissing her symptoms as exhaustion, Ledecky’s condition was eventually diagnosed by a specialist at Johns Hopkins. POTS, which causes rapid heart rate and dizziness, was managed through dietary changes and tailored training. She kept her diagnosis private before the 2016 Rio Olympics to avoid distraction.
Now, Ledecky feels confident managing her condition and is ready to share her story. She advises others with POTS to trust their healthcare professionals and value their support network, attributing her success to both her hard work and the support of her family and coaches.
