My story begins with a difficult mother-in-law who disapproved of my connection with her son. I realized my assumptions about her and her goals were erroneous. After she died, I discovered stunning facts about her, my marriage, and my life.
I was out of town when Betty, my MIL, died. Despite being ill for a long, Mom died abruptly, leaving me unable to catch a flight home. Explaining my husband’s mother is mildly complicated.
She hid her emotions and never liked me. However, she eventually accepted that I was married to her son, which was fine with me.
I returned home to find a cardboard box with a message on my porch. Note read, “For Maddie. Solo Open. Love, Betty.” Unable to speak. Her note surprised me because my MIL had never told me she loved me.
With mixed emotions, I grabbed the box and ran inside to open it. I placed the package on the kitchen table, ready to open it while my husband worked. My hands trembled as I opened it, and what I found upended my marriage!
A note was on a cash-filled envelope. Betty wrote the letter to me in her exquisite hand. I gently unwrapped it and read what my MIL wanted me to know after her death.
Dear Maddie,
I hope this letter finds you well and that you are reading it alone as asked. I have so much to say to you, and I hope you understand my reasons for not speaking up while I was alive.
First, I apologize deeply. My coldness and distance must have hurt you, and I’m sorry. Actually, I never hated you. My admiration for you has never wavered. I noticed your hard effort, trust, and kindness, which are unique and precious.
Your marriage to my son disappointed me, so I kept my distance. You deserve so much better, Maddie! I worry that living with him will kill your dreams and potential.
My son is not who you think. He is using you to prevent you from realizing your true self. And more, Maddie… His infidelity on you has been known for a long time. You deserve someone who loves and respects you, not someone who lies.
It’s too bad I never said these things while alive. I saw myself in you, and it crushed my heart to think you would end up like me, with unfulfilled goals. I regret becoming a housewife, and you may too.
You still have time. I left this envelope with money for your future and independence. Use it for divorce if you want. You can also start your career and goals with it.
I hope you live the life I was too afraid to. Maddie, you offer the world so much. Never let anyone stop you. Be fearless and your true self.
All my love and regrets,
Betty
Betty’s words brought tears to my eyes. I thought she disliked me, but she saw me best! Her remarks inspired me to take charge of my life and follow my aspirations.
We’d never been close, yet I felt closer to her then than ever. I felt her presence immediately, whether it was my imagination or wishful thinking. “Thank you,” I shouted.
I followed her advice and started a future I had almost given up on.
Following my MIL’s letter, my life has changed drastically in recent months. I heeded her advice and soon began planning my departure. Telling Luke about his adultery was one of the hardest things I ever did.
I waited till he got home from work that night. “Luke, we need to talk,” I replied, my voice firm but my heart racing.
Surprised, he stared at me. “What’s wrong, Maddie?”
The letter was gripped with shaky hands. This is from your mother. It was left for me. She knew your infidelity.”
His face paled. Maddie, I…
“Don’t,” I said. Excuses are unacceptable. No more.”
The following days were filled with hard conversations and realizations. Luke initially disputed everything, but later confessed. He was dating someone else for nearly a year! Betty saw through our sham marriage before I did.
My MIL’s letter and inheritance saved me. I divorced and left home. Both scary and freeing! I moved into a small downtown apartment and worked.
Betty gave me the wherewithal to operate a bakery, something I had always wanted. As weeks turned into months, I steadily rebuilt my life. I took a cooking class to pursue my dream.
New flat was small but cozy. It smelled like vanilla and cinnamon as I attempted new dishes every night. I was making sourdough bread dough one night when my phone rang. This was my best friend Jenna.
“Hi, Mads! You doing okay? As usual, she inquired cheerfully.
I’m OK, Jenna. Oh, really wonderful, I remarked, smiling. “I’m developing bakery recipes.”
Wow, amazing! So proud of you. Listen, a small business exhibition is next month. Grab a booth and show off your stuff.”
The notion was scary but exciting. You know what, Jen? Think I will.”
The expo changed me. I spent weeks honing my recipes and booth decor. I was nervous on the big day! After folks tried my pastries and bread, the response was overwhelming good!
I ended the day with a stack of business cards and catering orders! While packing up my booth, I felt Betty again and whispered, “Thank you again, Betty.” I might never have had the guts to follow my aspirations without her gift.
Though she had been challenging, Mom had showed me more love and support than I understood.
A year later, my bakery, “Betty’s Blessing,” was a local favorite!
This tiny business had a warm, welcoming feel. My artwork and Betty’s letter were on the walls. The smell of fresh bread and coffee greeted me every morning as I welcomed new and returning clients.
I heard the doorbell jingle while placing a platter of lemon tarts in the display case. As she entered, an older woman gazed about the shop with interest. Brightly smiling, she approached the counter.
“Hi there. This site is great, she said. I’m Mrs. Green. Recently moved into the neighborhood.”
Mrs. Green, welcome to Betty’s Blessing. My name is Maddie. Can I give you something to try?
Her eyes lit up at the display. “Everything looks delicious. Please serve me a lemon tart.”
As I handed her the sample tart, she chewed and closed her eyes in joy. Maddie, this is great. I’ll surely return!”
Her remarks made me proud! The store blessed me and everyone who visited. It reminded us that unexpected gifts can bring perhaps the most beautiful life transformations.
I contemplated my progress when I closed the shop that night. My MIL’s remarks gave me the courage to leave a bad life and follow my passion. I knew my accomplishments would make her pleased.
“Thank you again, Betty,” I replied, stargazing. “For everything.”
Every step of the journey was difficult but worthwhile. I had found my calling, transformed my life, and discovered my strength. A woman left a box on my porch, and she showed me more affection than I expected.
Other daughter-in-laws’ MILs protected them from unhappy marriages like Maddie. After her husband disappears for days, Abbie’s MIL tells her about his locations and secret life.
