Doctors are faced with diagnosing a wide range of illnesses every single day. After a while, they begin to pick up the signs that indicate what ailment a person may be suffering from. Sometimes, it is through a description of the symptoms from the patient or a thorough physical examination. However, a few doctors recently shared one sign that indicated that the patient was suffering from a serious illness. Believe it or not, that sign was a single sentence.

The sentence was recently a trending topic on social media platforms such as Twitter and Reddit, where multiple medical professionals ended up posting their comments on the subject. One such post appeared on the r/medicine thread on Reddit, where one doctor described the sentence as a “clinical pearl”. The post explained that hearing this single sentence revealed an almost 100% chance that the person who said it was suffering from a serious illness. After hearing this sentence, doctors have typically discovered illnesses such as cancer and myocardial infarction.

The sentence that instantly piques a doctor’s attention is, “I feel fine but my wife made me come in.” That is correct, your wife is more likely to notice changes in your health than you are. So, if she suggests that you see a doctor, it’s best that you take her advice! Several other medical professionals agreed with this comment, such as emergency room doctor Sam Ghali. In his Twitter post, he stated that hearing that sentence was a strong indication that “something was seriously wrong until proven otherwise.”

It Is Not the Only Phrase That Indicates Potentially Serious Illnesses

There are also several other phrases that raise red flags for doctors and other health professionals. One medic commented about another concerning phrase she often heard, which was: “I don’t want to be a bother, but..” Some people seem to have an issue reaching out for medical help as they feel they are being an inconvenience. This can often lead to them only reaching out for medical help when it has reached emergency levels. A mother’s intuition often also picks up on subtle signs that others don’t. In one such case, a mother brought in her son who was attending college at the time. She said that although he wasn’t displaying any physical symptoms, something seemed off. The doctors checked him out and could not find anything wrong. They were about to release him when he suddenly had a stroke.

Many Men Try to Avoid Visiting the Doctor As Much as Possible

A recent study revealed that almost two-thirds of its participants avoided visiting the doctor as much as possible. Additionally, 37 percent of the participants admitted to withholding medical information from their doctors. 72 % of the participants said they would much rather do chores, such as cleaning toilets than visit a doctor. However, all of this withholding the truth and avoidance only puts men at even greater risk of serious illnesses. So why do so many men avoid doctors as much as possible?

Many paramedics have reported that their patients often refuse to be taken to hospital or get into an ambulance. This has even occurred while the patient was actively suffering from a heart attack! They have even had to resort to asking family members to try to convince the patient or call the emergency room doctors to try to talk sense into them. On many occasions, it’s simply because the patient did not want to bother anyone and believed that their ailment would eventually improve on its own. Sometimes men believe that they are invincible, while other times it is actually fear that drives their decisions. Men, in general, do not like to feel vulnerable.

When these men can eventually be persuaded to seek medical help, they often lie about their symptoms or withhold important details from the doctor. Once again, this mainly stems from a belief that things will get better on their own or potential embarrassment about their symptoms. This issue typically seems to be prevalent among men, as women are naturally more inclined to share intimate details with friends and others. Men, on the other hand, grow up believing that discussing your feelings is a sign of weakness.

While we may find it embarrassing to talk about personal matters to a health practitioner, the consequences of ignoring signs of serious illness can prove fatal. If your wife notices a change in your health, or you can sense that something is wrong, you should see your doctor as soon as you can. It’s important to remember that your doctor has likely seen and heard about every conceivable type of illness, so don’t be afraid or embarrassed. Your long-term health is much more important than temporary discomfort.
