Two devoted grandparents’ tragic last image, which depicts their frantic attempts to avoid the surging floodwaters in North Carolina, has gone viral on social media.
Megan Drye, her parents, and their seven-year-old son Micah were forced to flee their Asheville home as rising floodwaters encircled it, just like so many other families are doing across the United States at this time.
The community is only one of many that Hurricane Helene pounded in the US Southeast.
Mom Megan climbed to safety on their home’s roof with her son and her parents, who were in their 70s, according to the Daily Mail.
Taking to Facebook to share the family’s plight, Megan’s sister, Jessica Drye Turner, shared images of her loved ones trapped on the roof, explaining how they were “watching 18 wheelers and cars floating by” in the devastating floods.
In one picture, the grandparents were covered in blankets and dressed in regular clothes.
Sadly, the roof collapsed soon after the picture was taken, drowning little Micah and Megan’s parents in the rising floodwaters.
Megan was “wedged” and managed to survive.
“I have never felt this kind of loss, devastation, and aching of my spirit. I cry out to my Lord,” Micah’s aunt Jessica wrote on Facebook.
Jessica reported in an update that she had at last found Megan. Afterwards, the remains of Micah were discovered 0.5 miles further.
Since then, Heather, Megan’s other sister, has started a GoFundMe page in support of the bereaved family.
“For Megan Drye, our miracle, who has lived a mother’s worst nightmare,” the page description states. “She has survived the unimaginable and lost absolutely everything. The support of others will carry her and encourage her to keep taking one breath, one step, and one day at a time.”
“We are living in the hope and peace that they are with Jesus, and we will see our parents and Micah again one day.”
Over $66,000 has been raised for the distraught mother as of this writing.
According to CBS News, Hurricane Helene has claimed the lives of over 130 people in several states, leaving countless more homeless and stranded.
President Biden has stated that 600 individuals are still missing as of right now since communication lines have been left in several places.
“God willing, they’re alive, but there’s no way to contact them,” Biden told reporters on Monday.
More than 3,500 federal response troops have been sent to the region, according to confirmation from the White House.
