When George Clooney retired his status as eligible bachelor to be the leading man in Amal’s life, he likely didn’t know the woman who stole his heart would also steal the spotlight.
Now after almost 10 years of marriage, the Oscar winning actor reveals that he’s “embarrassed” when his wife shows him her red carpet looks.
Keep reading to learn why the handsome Clooney finds Amal’s looks embarrassing!
Once known as Hollywood’s most eligible bachelor, George Clooney, 62, was completely smitten when he first met Amal Alamuddin, 45, in 2013.
“Amal walked in the room, and I was clearly done,” Clooney said.
Within only six months of their first date, Clooney proposed to Amal, a stunning and brilliant Lebanese-British human rights attorney.
Recalling the moment he asked her to be his wife, Clooney shares, “Literally, I dropped it on her, and she just kept saying, ‘Oh, my God,’ and ‘Wow!’ We just sat there, and finally I said, ‘Listen, I’m 52, and I’ve been on my knee now for about 28 minutes, so I have to get an answer out of this or I’m going to throw a hip out. I might not be able to stand back up!”
In September 2014, the couple were married at the luxurious Aman Canal Grande hotel in Venice, Italy, with a star-studded guest list that included Bono, Matt Damon and Bill Murray.
‘Slighted’ by Amal
In mid-December, George Clooney, 62, and his wife Amal, 45, were at the Los Angeles premiere of his new film, The Boys in the Boat, which he both stars in and directs.
Posing for photos with her handsome husband, Amal lit up the red carpet with a show-stopping yellow Atelier Versace gown paired with Cartier jewels.
Meanwhile, Clooney looked equally gorgeous in a black suit with a navy blue button-down shirt underneath.
Joking that he feels “slighted” by the attention commanded by his wife’s beauty, Clooney tells Entertainment Tonight, “She cleans up…I’m always embarrassed because I’m wearing something that I’ve worn, like, 1,000 times.”
Speaking with effortless humor, the proud husband adds, “My entire career has been reduced to a plus-one now. I did one of those Women in Film things a couple years ago, and I had to introduce myself as ‘Amal Clooney’s husband’ because, honestly, I was dead otherwise.”
The new film, which hits theaters on Christmas Day, follows the Depression-era beginnings of the University of Washington’s rowing team to clinching gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
When Entertainment Tonight asked if Amal had any say in his new film, the star kept the jokes going with his response.
Clooney teased, “I didn’t want to say it, but now that you brought it up, she directed the film. The flair, the British flair.”
The couple’s 6-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella also did not have a say in the film, but they did visit him on the set of the sports-drama, The Boys in the Boat.
“Yeah, the kids came to visit. They think that all I do is play in the water,” Clooney says. “I did a movie a couple years ago called The Midnight Sky, and I had to shoot stuff in a tank, and they came to visit and I’m in clothes, but I’m in a tank. So, whenever I go to work, they think I’m swimming.”
While his new directorial efforts tells a dramatic story, Clooney also leans on the more playful side of his talents when he can.
Earlier this year he resurrected his role as Batman with a surprise cameo appearance in the final scene of the film The Flash, which stars Ezra Miller as the titular character.
Since 1997’s Batman & Robin flopped – it is considered one of the worst superhero films of all time – fans were pleasantly surprised to see Clooney briefly reprising his role as Batman.
“There was such a clamor for me to come back as Batman, as you know,” Clooney quips. “They were like, ‘Can we do it without the rubber nipples?’ I was like, ‘Well, it’s not really my Batman, is it?’”
Unfortunately, his cameo in The Flash did not serve as an easter egg, teasing fans with his return to the DC Universe as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
“I don’t think there’s enough drugs in the world for me to go back to Batman.” Referencing his cameo, he adds, “It was fun to do because, you know, it was a bit. It was supposed to be funny.”
