Schools usually hold family fun day events once annually wherein parents of the students gather and enjoy a day of games and camaraderie at a prepared venue, if not in their school premises. However, children with single parents worry if their mother or father would attend the event without their partners. This did not concern a single mother who did not hesitate to don a man’s attire and attend her son’s “Dads and Doughnuts” school event, which surprised everyone at the venue!
Whitney Kittrell, a single mother of 2 from St. George, Utah, said that when her son came back from school one day, he gave her a flyer that said that there would be an upcoming event called “Dad and Doughnuts”. The children and their fathers will be eating doughnuts for breakfast at their kindergarten school.
She wrote on Facebook: “When I became a single mom over three years ago, I made a promise to myself that I would do anything I could, even if it meant going out of my comfort zone, to give my kids a “normal” life and the same experiences as other kids.”
Unfortunately, Whitney’s mood was not fine on that day, so she asked her son, “Do you want to go with grandpa?” With a sweet smile on his face, her son answered, “No, I want to go with you. You are my mother and father.”
Whitney’s heart melted at his response, and she also did not want her son to be exempted from the event, so she decided to surprise him on the special day. She drew on a goatee and wore a baseball hat. She also wore a pair of sweatpants to dress up like a ‘Dad’. Unexpectedly, her son was surprised and felt excited to attend the event in school.
“So, this morning, I gathered up my best dad outfit, painted on some facial hair, and went to breakfast with my sweet son,” Whitney said.
When they arrived at his kindergarten school, her son immediately took her hand and introduced her to the first classmate he saw. “I was so embarrassed, but I couldn’t help but smile when he introduced me to his little friends saying, ‘This is my mom. She’s my dad too, so I brought her!’” Whitney’s eyes welled with tears, but she felt relieved.
Sharing the happy event on Facebook, Whitney wrote: “When I went to leave, he ran after me and hugged me tight around my neck and whispered, ‘Mom… I know that you’ll always be there and do anything for me. Thank you. I love you.’ kissed my cheek and ran off. I hope he remembers this day ‘cause I’ll never forget it or his sweet words.”
Whitney shared photos on her Facebook page, along with their story of the school event. Netizens were touched by her son’s heartwarming gesture, and her post garnered more than 9,000 likes and reactions. Everyone was moved by their unforgettable actions.
