Many Super Bowl fans had different opinions about Reba’s version of the national anthem. Some thought it was great, while others thought it could have been better. But when it came to Andra Day’s performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” also known as the Black national anthem, many people online agreed.
This was the fourth time that the Black national anthem was included in the Super Bowl pregame show. The song has been around since 1900 and represents the serious yet hopeful desire for freedom among Black Americans.
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was adopted by the NAACP and was an important symbol during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.
Before Andra Day sang at the Super Bowl, there were a lot of comments online about her performance. But after she sang, there were even more opinions.
Some people, like Rep. Mike Loychik, a Republican lawmaker, said there shouldn’t be a “black national anthem.” They think we’re all Americans and should be united under the regular national anthem. They were upset that the NFL was bringing up racial issues.
Megyn Kelly, a TV personality, tweeted that the “so-called Black National Anthem” doesn’t belong at the Super Bowl. She said we already have a national anthem that includes everyone.
Others said they were taught that the national anthem is for all Americans, not just white or black people. They think having a separate anthem for black people divides us more. They believe we should act like one united country.
Some people also noticed that the crowd didn’t seem very excited.
