Two days before her tragic death, Halyna Hutchins shared a poignant Instagram post featuring her riding a horse on the set of Rust. On October 21, during a dress rehearsal, Hutchins, the 42-year-old cinematographer, was fatally shot by a live round from a prop gun held by Baldwin. The gun, handed to Baldwin by Gutierrez-Reed, also wounded director Joel Souza. Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison for failing to adhere to basic safety protocols.
Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer criticized Gutierrez-Reed, stating, “You alone turned a safe weapon into a lethal weapon.”
Baldwin has consistently denied responsibility for the incident, insisting he had no idea how a live bullet ended up on set. “Someone put a live bullet in a gun, a bullet that wasn’t even supposed to be on the property,” he told ABC News. Speaking at the Boulder Film Festival, Baldwin defended his reliance on safety experts: “I’ve relied on the safety experts there to declare the gun is safe and hand me the gun. Never had a problem.”
Despite his defense, Baldwin’s legal troubles persist. Scheduled for trial in July, prosecutors have filed a motion compelling Gutierrez-Reed to testify. However, documents summarizing her prison phone calls suggest her testimony could further complicate Baldwin’s case. In these calls, Gutierrez-Reed expressed a refusal to testify if subpoenaed, criticized prosecutors and jurors, and even stated a desire to see Baldwin in jail.
Public reaction to the incident and subsequent legal proceedings has been varied. Many emphasize the need for stricter safety protocols on film sets to prevent similar tragedies. One user remarked, “This appears to have been a terrible accident due to safety rules not being followed on set. Mr. Baldwin is not at fault, but the rules need to change unless people are ok with accidental deaths by movie firearms.”
Another user highlighted Gutierrez-Reed’s behavior during her trial: “Hannah Gutierrez-Reed received the max of 18 months for her role in the Rust shooting & death of Halyna Hutchins. Her jail calls disparaging the jurors and judge factored into this sentence. I cannot stress enough why people should stop talking about their cases on the jail phone.”
Defending Baldwin, a user commented, “It is really not fair to have Alec Baldwin be the face of this tragedy. He wasn’t in charge of loading that gun. Safety on set needs to be taken so much more seriously.”
Meanwhile, Baldwin and his wife Hilaria have announced their new reality series, The Baldwins, set to air in 2025. “We’re inviting you into our home to experience the ups and downs; the good, the bad, the wild and the crazy,” Baldwin said in an Instagram clip promoting the series.
