Holding Firm for Freedom at 81
The legendary singer and actress Barbra Streisand is no stranger to controversy. She is 81 years old and yet uses her strong voice to criticize things that she sees as threats to democracy.
Donald Trump is Streisand’s most recent target, and she is making it plain that she won’t support him if he wins the presidency again in 2024.
The Distaste of Streisand for Trump
Streisand has long been a fundraiser and supporter of the Democratic Party, and she has never been afraid to voice her disapproval of Trump. She has referred to Trump as “the Liar in Chief, the Groper in Chief,” calling him “so stupid” and “ill-informed.”
During a recent interview with Stephen Colbert, she bluntly stated, “If he becomes president, I can’t live in this country.”
However, Streisand has made similarly spectacular pronouncements before. Following Trump’s victory in 2016, she made the same vows as many other celebrities to flee the country. “America was great – before you were elected,” she joked at the time.
Using Music to Vent Resentment
In 2018, Streisand released her 36th album, “Walls,” as a result of her growing dissatisfaction with Trump. This musical masterwork, which has strong songs like “Don’t Lie to Me,” pays respect to Trump’s despotism.
According to Streisand, she was sickened by the nonstop stream of false information and wanted to use her music as a way to vent her wrath. She opposes deceit and is certain that the nation should not be misled.
Artists as a Nation’s Conscience
In her autobiography, “My Name is Barbra,” Streisand discusses the conflict that exists between artists and politicians.
She genuinely feels that artists act as a nation’s conscience by pressuring society to face hard realities. “That is why art is the enemy of tyrants and dictators,” asserts Streisand with audacity.
Remaining and Pursuing Change
Regretfully, Streisand’s strong voice was insufficient to influence voters in 2016. After Trump was elected, artists like Streisand had to make a tough choice: should they leave the nation or continue to fight?
Some made lighter jokes about traveling to other nations or even planets, such as talk show host Jon Stewart and comic George Lopez. Some, like Chelsea Handler, realized that in a divided country, their platforms and voices were more important than ever.
Having Hope for the President Biden, Joe
Streisand looks to President Joe Biden for optimism following four years of gloom. She thinks the nation is going in the right way and admires his compassion, honesty, and integrity. She is still worried about Trump’s possible comeback to power and the impending elections, though. Streisand is adamant that she will not reside in a nation run by a guy she views as “so stupid” and “so ill-informed.”
Restoring the Nobility of Truth in a New America
Ultimately, Streisand imagines a future America devoid of retaliation, pollution, insults, and obscenities. She fervently believes that America won’t be genuinely great again until the grandeur of truth is restored, thus she pushes for its restoration.
