The Earth’s largest tsunami ever recorded would certainly leave an impression, so much so that NASA has confirmed its impact can be seen from space.

Seemingly out of a Sci-fi film, the largest tsunami ever recorded would have truly been a devastating sight.

Following a 7.8 magnitude earthquake on July 10, 1958, a wave of biblical proportions occurred on the Fairweather Fault in southeast Alaska.

This resulted in 90 tons of rock falling into Lituya Bay, generating a wave with a maximum height of a whopping 1,720 feet. This proceeded to completely decimate the forest’s vegetation and ripped millions of trees from its banks.

The Western States Seismic Policy Council (WSSPC) has detailed the details of the incident, and how it resulted in multiple deaths, as well as significant changes to the area’s landscape.

“A total of five people were killed in the event: three people died on Khantaak Island at the mouth of Yakutat Bay when the beach they were standing on subsided 100 feet below sea level; the other two died when their boat was sunk by the tsunami at Lituya Bay,” the council explained.

“Two other boats also were anchored in the bay that night; those four people managed to ride out the wave. Two were rescued from a dinghy after their boat sank, the others managed to pilot out of the bay on their own power, but at great risk, as the water continued to swirl unpredictably, and was littered with millions of tree trunks that had been ripped from the banks.”

65 years on, the impact in the area can still be seen. NASA’s Landsat program has shown that from space the damage that was done to the shoreline is still imprinted in the forest.

Initially, scientists were perplexed by the sheer size of the wave as it was not clear what could have caused such a massive reaction.

They eventually discovered the rock that plummeted into the water that caused the tsunuami, and estimated it to be 2,400 feet by 3,000 feet and 300 feet thick.

It had dislodged from the face of the northern wall of the inlet, and fallen 2,000 feet into the bay.

Unfortunately, there was not a lot anyone could have done to prevent the deaths that occurred, but it does put into perspective just how devastating nature can be.

A YouTube explorer has revealed what it was like traveling to a geologic structure ‘on Google Earth that no one has seen before’.

When scouring Google Maps, a YouTuber who goes by ‘thePOVchannel’ came across ‘one of the most bizarre’ geologic structures he’d ‘ever found on Google Earth‘ and in the belief it was ‘hiding something,’ the explorer decided to not just remain behind a laptop, but travel to the location to go and check it out for himself.

In a video uploaded to his platform in December 2023, the YouTuber reveals the only way to reach the strange structure is ‘through several miles of intricate and treacherous petrified sand dunes’.

“I wasn’t sure I would make it or what I would find,” he continues. “But I ended up leaving this place completely exhausted and with more questions than answers.”

But how did the trip actually go and did the structure turn out to be the ‘fortress with holes’ which the YouTuber predicted it to be?

Well, the explorer takes his followers along for the journey, alongside his trusty companion – an exceedingly cute dog.

And it’s not long before they come across multiple obstacles, from big rocks blocking the way, to the ‘massive amount of huge petrified sand dunes’.

Thankfully, by staying to the top of the dunes, the explorer avoids the rocky slopes or small canyons below, but the ‘steep’ terrain doesn’t make the journey much smoother.

The YouTuber comes across some ‘really cool lines in the sandstone’ one shaped like an ‘S’ before he finally gets closer and closer to the geologic structure he spotted on Google Earth, noting it’s ‘way, way bigger’ than he first anticipated it being.

The explorer continues: “When I looked on Google Maps I though, ‘Oh you know maybe it’s like the size of a big house’. Nope, it is a huge massive chunk of sandstone sticking up out of the earth.”

The YouTuber reflects he’s ‘amazed’ he wasn’t forced to ‘backtrack at all’ and definitely got ‘lucky’ picking the path he did which he notes ‘almost never happens’.

Making his way up and into the structure, he walks through a pretty cool archway which leads to a stunning bay-like structure, the sun creeping in.

He resolves: “Wow. This is the first place we checked out and I am kind of blown away right now. This is getting me really excited about what might be around the corner.”

The explorer then stumbles across a footprint on the ground, which he believes belongs to a dinosaur with ‘a clear three-mark indentation’ alongside one of the ‘honeycomb structures [he] saw from the sky’.

He resolves: “Wow.”

And it’s not taken long for people to flood to the post in amazement.

One user said: “Freaking love your channel man. I live in SW United States, and I do a lot of Google Earth scouting for my hunting. Sometimes I’ll come across something odd, and check it out- but it’s quite rare due to familial obligations and time restrictions. Really like the concept of what you have going on here, and makes me want to get out more often and do the same. Keep up the great work!”

And another wrote: “Obviously the vast overwhelming majority of people will never ever venture to such places. That is why I applaud you for taking us along to see sights we would otherwise never see. Thank you and your dog… Thumbs Up!”

A former cruise ship worker has explained a disturbing theory as to why ‘free ice cream parties’ are often thrown onboard.

‘Free ice cream parties’ have been a thing for a while, with passengers celebrating when the unexpected day comes, but it turns out the apparent reason behind them is slightly more sinister.

One person asked Dara that if the ‘amount of ice cream available suddenly goes up it means they need more freezer space for a body’.

To which Dara told her 1.1 million followers: “This is unfortunately often true.

“If the crew suddenly makes a bunch of ice cream available to the passengers – free ice cream party – it’s often because more people have died on the ship than they have room for in the morgue.”

Dara shared that she was once onboard for six months while travelling to the Caribbean, but has never herself experienced this herself, but claimed that many of co-workers had.

“Thankfully, we didn’t have to deal with this kind of stuff, but we were friends with some crew members who did,” she said.

“There are a lot of older people on ships and often people die on cruises,” Dara noted.

“So the morgue, I believe they said they held about seven people.

“If more than seven people died on that particular ship, they would have to start moving bodies to the freezer, which means they needed to make room in the freezer.”

The video has now been viewed over two million times, with other cruise workers adding to the conversation.

One commented: “Cruise ship medic here. Can confirm the morgue and ice cream correlation.”

While others appeared concerned by the eerie confession as one wrote: “I’m supposed to go on a cruise in May. Now I’m gonna be that guy. ‘You know if they serve us a bunch of ice cream then a bunch of people died’.”

Another added: “Thanks for the info. There was an ice cream party on my cruise ship, and now [I] know why.”

Someone else commented: “I swear every cruise fact I learn makes me want to go on one less.”

There’s a volcano in Antarctica that spews out literal bits of gold.

If only money grew on trees or fell from the sky eh? Well, if you fancy a trip to the cold depths of Antarctica and fancy your chances getting fairly up close and personal with the highest active volcano in the continent, the latter of these scenarios almost comes true.

American geologists made the discovery back in 1991, New Scientist reports.

At the time, geologists found gold particles in the volcanic gases and in snow near to the volcano, with IFL Science stating particles of the precious metal were even detected 1,000km (621 miles) away.

And the volcano remains active to this day.

Philip Kyle, from the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in Socorro, explained gold deposits can originate in volcanic rock and so when lava from the mountain – which has a summit elevation of 3,794 meters (12,448 feet) – emits hot gas, this carries some of the gold particles into the air.

But how much gold is spewed out and what is this gold-spewing mountain called? I hear you cry.

Well, it’s called Mount Erebus and the gold flecks which American geologists found spewing out of it measured between ‘0.1 and 20 micrometers’ in the volcanic gases and ’60 micrometers’ in nearby snow.

Still, while this amount may seem minuscule, over the course of a single day, scientists estimate that the volcano churns out around 80g (2.8 ounces) of gold.

According to Gold.co.uk, at the time of writing, the current price of a gram of gold is $75.76.

This means the volcano spews out around $6,000 worth of gold every day – although, this probably depends on the quality and certain other factors, I’m no expert in gold – unfortunately.

However, there’s a much more grave and important reason as to why people travel down to visit the mountain.

Mount Erebus is also known for being the scene of tragedy.

On November 28, 1979, Air New Zealand Flight 901 crashed into the side of the mountain.

It had been flying over Ross Island where Mount Erebus is located as part of its scheduled antarctic sightseeing flights which had been operating since 1977.

All 237 passengers and 20 members of crew on board were killed in the crash and from that day forward Air New Zealand stopped all of its flyovers across Antarctica.

The disaster became known as the Erebus disaster.
