A potentially deadly crisis was averted Tuesday evening when police in Deltona, Florida were called to assist with locating a missing child.
Around 7:30 p.m. the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office received a call about a missing child. A five-year-old boy with autism had escaped his family’s home through a second-story door.
Deputy Wes Brough and several other deputies responded to the call.
When they arrived at the scene, family and neighbors were already searching for the boy. Brough learned the child was attracted to water so he began checking bodies of water throughout the neighborhood.
Around 7:48 p.m. Brough heard a small child’s voice in the distance. It was the missing child.
The boy was clinging on to a log in the middle of the pond.
Brough immediately ditched his bullet proof vest and sprinted into the murky water. He grabbed ahold of the boy and carried him to dry land.
A fellow officer caught the entire rescue on his body camera.
“I thanked God a lot for putting me in that position one, and two for allowing that kid to be above water and breathing fine when we got there,” Brough said. “That’s all glory to God for putting me in the right place at the right time.”
The sheriff’s deputy also attributed his quick work and knowing how to handle the situation to the Autism Awareness Training he and other deputies received.
