Actor James Darren, beloved for his roles in both film and television, has passed away at the age of 88. Known for his iconic performances in GidgetT.J. Hooker, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Darren’s death marks the end of a long and storied career in entertainment.

TMZ reports that Darren died peacefully in his sleep at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. His son, Jim Moret, shared that Darren had been struggling with heart issues and was under care in the hospital’s cardiac unit.

Initially admitted for an aortic valve replacement, Darren’s health condition was considered too fragile to undergo the surgery safely. After being sent home, he was readmitted to the hospital shortly before his passing.

Reflecting on his father’s character, Jim described him as “cool,” saying, “I always thought he would pull through because he was always so cool.”

James Darren first rose to fame in 1959 when he starred as Moondoggie in Gidget, a role that turned him into a teen idol. He continued to capture audiences’ hearts by reprising the role in two sequels: Gidget Goes Hawaiian and Gidget Goes to Rome. On the small screen, Darren is remembered for his portrayal of Officer Jim Corrigan on T.J. Hooker, appearing in 66 episodes over four seasons.

Beyond acting, Darren had a successful music career, performing the theme song for Gidget, and later expanding his talents to directing. His directorial work included episodes of popular shows like Melrose PlaceBeverly Hills, 90210, and The A-Team.

James Darren’s career spanned over decades, influencing many facets of the entertainment world. His legacy as both an actor and musician will continue to be celebrated.
