Kneecap has led the British Independent Film Awards nominations (BIFAs).
The Irish-language film created by the band has racked up an impressive fourteen nominations, including a Best British Independent Film nomination.
The comedy-drama, which stars the Belfast hip-hop trio as themselves ells their “riotous and ground-breaking” origin story.
The film has received rave reviews since it premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival in January, and was released in Irish cinemas in August.
Alongside the members of Kneecap, it also stars Michael Fassbender, Josie Walker, Fionnuala Flaherty, Jessica Reynolds, Adam Best, and Simone Kirby in supporting roles.
Writer-director Rich Peppiatt is up for Best Director, Best Screenplay, The Douglas Hickox Award and Best Debut Screenwriter.
The rap trio Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara), Naoise Ó Cairealláin (Moglai Bap), JJ Ó Dochartaigh (DJ Provai) are nominated for Best Joint Lead Performance.
Alongside those awards, the film has also been nominated for Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, and Best Editing.
As well as Best Music Supervision, Best Original Music, Best Production Design and Best Sound.
Kneecap producer Trevor Birney said of the impressive nominations: “For Kneecap to be recognised at this level is a testament not only to Rich Peppiatt’s creative vision and determination but also to the work of an amazing cast and crew along with the unstinting support of our financiers.”
The film has also been hotly tipped to represent Ireland at the 2025 Oscars.
US entertainment trade publication Variety published its early predictions for next year’s Academy Awards in August.
The outlet listed the critically acclaimed Irish-language film Kneecap among their five predicted nominees for the Best International Feature category
