A customer of a restaurant in Menorca, Spain has taken to Twitter after a surprising charge came up on their already expensive bill

A customer has spoken out after receiving his bill and noticing a surprising charge added on – and his reaction has left social media users divided.

Amid a cost of living crisis, prices are rising dramatically and it’s rare you don’t end up gawping at your receipt now, as one dad’s weekly bill to feed his six children ended up costing a staggering amount.

And another customer has been left particularly taken aback after being served his bill and realizing there was an extra charge added onto the – already hefty – sum.

Antonio Barbeito was on holiday in Menorca, Spain and dined out at an unnamed restaurant.

While there, to drink, he had some water, orange juice and two Coca Cola zero, alongside two coffees – one with milk.

And to eat, he had shrimp tartar, a feast of lobster, some fried baby squid, mussels and two scoops of ice cream to finish.

It’s not a surprise given the amount of lobster which can be spotted on the receipt that the meal came to a hefty sum of $270.

However, there’s one charge on the small piece of paper which left Barbeito stunned.

Despite shelling out on an expensive lobster dish and spending a generous amount at the restaurant, Barbeito realized that he had an additional charge on his receipt for a glass of ice.

The ice came to a total of $3 and it shocked Barbeito so much that he took to Twitter to share a photograph of the receipt and explain his issue.

He said: “[Translation] I love national tourism and I almost never leave Spain to support a community as important as the hospitality industry, but on a bill of 250 euros, being charged three euros for extra ice seems extremely out of place.”

And it’s not taken long for people to flood to the post to weigh in.

One Twitter user said: “[Translation] Absolutely right. It’s a ridiculous charge. They just need to charge for electricity and rent for the cutlery.”

However, another argued: “The protocol is correct. If you buy a pair of 150 euro trainers and ask for extra laces, you will pay for them. If you fill up a 100 € tank of gas and want a pack of gum, you’re going to pay for it. Extra ice bucket…..that’s it.”

Barbeito added that he doesn’t ‘want to bother anyone’ – presumably why he’s not named the restaurant in his post – however, he added he’s posted the hashtag Menorca so that hopefully the person in charge of the restaurant ‘can see it’ and will ‘recognize the ticket’.
