Mariah Carey has revealed the tragic loss of both her mother and sister over the past weekend. The singer shared the heartbreaking news with People magazine, confirming that her mother Patricia and sister Alison passed away on the same day.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” Carey stated in an exclusive to People. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed,” she added. “I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Carey has yet to provide any further details regarding the causes of her mother’s and sister’s deaths.
Patricia Carey, like her famous daughter, was musically talented, having trained as an opera singer at Juilliard and worked as a vocal coach. Though Mariah credits her mother for shaping her vocal abilities, their relationship had its challenges. In her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the Grammy-winning artist reflected on the complexity of their bond.
“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Carey wrote. She described their relationship as one marked by a mixture of pride, pain, and admiration. Despite the struggles, Carey remained connected to her mother, expressing love and understanding.
The memoir also includes a dedication to her mother, acknowledging Patricia’s efforts: ” I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always,” Carey wrote.
As this story continues to develop, further updates will be provided when available.
We are sending our thoughts and prayers to Carey’s family during this difficult time.
