A man who woke up from an eight-month coma was tragically killed after being hit by a pickup truck.
Drew Kohn, from Florida, was dubbed a ‘miracle’ man after surviving an accident in 2017.
Yet heartbreakingly, the 29-year-old was fatally struck on July 26, 2024, over six years after coming out of a 244-day coma.
His mother, Yolanda Osborne-Kohn, told WTLV: “God honored my request, and I’m not mad.
“I’m not angry. I’m at peace. I got seven years, I remember sitting on Drew’s hospital bed and saying to myself, ‘Thy will be done.’”
Kohn was reportedly walking on an eastbound roadway in Jacksonville, Florida, at around 5:30 a.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck.
In a statement to People magazine, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said: “At that time, it was dark, and the pedestrian was not wearing reflective clothing.
“Unfortunately, the driver of the pick-up truck did not see the pedestrian and struck him on the outside lane. The driver of the pickup truck stopped and called 911. The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue (JFRD) responded to the scene and pronounced the victim deceased.”
Authorities added that the truck’s driver stayed at the scene and no one else was involved or hurt.
It was also disclosed that traffic homicide detectives had been at the scene and investigated the incident, alongside the medical examiner’s office.
Following the tragedy, Kohn’s family set up a GoFundMe to help cover funeral costs and ‘medical expenses he accumulated.’ At the time of writing, it’s raised over $18,000.
The fundraiser’s description reveals that he was just ‘days away from his 30th birthday’ and describes him as a ‘modern-day miracle.’
Years before Kohn’s untimely passing, just days before his 23rd birthday, he had been involved in a horrific accident that had left him in a coma.
On July 17, 2017, Kohn had been heading to the gym on his motorcycle when it collided with a car.
The then 22-year-old was rushed to the hospital and was put in a coma with a traumatic brain injury, along with a broken shoulder, impaled lungs, and other injuries, WTLV reports.
The GoFundMe page adds: “Doctors thought he was brain dead and would never walk or talk again.”
Oshnourne-Kohn told WTLV that doctors suggested she collect her son’s organs for donation, believing he would never recover. Yet she had faith in God.
The mother recalled: “It was because of my faith that gave me the boldness to speak up and push back and let them know ‘You’re not getting a toenail or an eyelash.’”
Almost a year after the collision, Kohn came out of his coma, with his first words reportedly being (per First Coast News): “Yeah, Mom, I’m okay. I love you, Mom.”
Slowly, Kohn recovered and later described himself as ‘a modern-day miracle,’ adding: “My story represents never giving up hope. All things are possible when God is in it. I just would love to tell others to never give up.”
The fundraiser says Kohn ‘is now completely healed and free, sitting at the feet of Jesus.’
