Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama’s mother, passed away early on Friday morning. Her age was eighty-six.
Robinson’s family announced in a statement that he passed away quietly.
The statement read, “As a mother, she was our rock, a serene and nonjudgmental witness to our victories and setbacks.”
“No matter how far we had traveled, she was always, always there to welcome us home with that profound and lasting love.”
Following her son-in-law Barack Obama’s election to the US presidency in 2008, Robinson gained notoriety as the country’s first grandmother.
In a separate statement, Michelle Obama added that her mother served as her rock.
“Always there for whatever I needed,” the woman tweeted.
We are devastated to learn that she died away today; she was our family’s constant rock.
Though she kept to herself, Robinson had a significant role in the White House during both of Obama’s administrations.
She attended performances in the East Room and holiday celebrations while traveling overseas.
But Sasha and Malia, her grandchildren, were her primary concern.
“We wish she were here to offer us some perspective, to mend our heavy hearts with a laugh and a dose of her wisdom,” the family said in a message, expressing how much they will all miss her.
But we find solace in the fact that she is back in her devoted lover Fraser’s arms, that she has positioned her TV tray next to his chair, and that they are raising their glasses to their tipples as she recounts him tales of this wild and amazing journey. She misses him terribly.
Though Robinson had lived in Chicago her whole life, in 2009 she consented to go to Washington, DC, in order to assist in caring for her young grandchildren who were housed in the White House.
She was essential to us. The women relied on her. The family described her as “our rock through it all” in a tribute.
“She loved being Malia and Sasha’s grandmother, just as much as she loved Avery, Leslie, Austin, and Aaron.”
Robinson was raised on Chicago’s South Side after being born there in 1937. There, she raised her two children, Craig Robinson and Michelle Robinson.
Their marriage took place in 1960, and he passed away from multiple sclerosis in 1991.
After moving from the South Side to the White House, Robinson found it difficult to adjust to being served on.
She frequently had to plead with her coworkers to be allowed to complete her own tasks, such as laundry.
Family members claimed, “She preferred spending her time upstairs with a TV tray, in the room outside her bedroom with big windows that looked out at the Washington Monument, rather than hobnobbing with Oscar winners or Nobel laureates.”
“The Pope was the only guest she explicitly requested to meet.”

Among the many who sent tributes to Robinson was Billie Jean King, the 39-time Grand Slam winner.
“We are extending our sincere sympathies to the Obama family on the demise of Marian Robinson, the mother of the former first lady,” King informed us.
“In 2013, I got the opportunity to spend some alone time with her during the Arthur Ashe Kids Day at the US Open.
“May her soul find peace.”
“My family sends our love,” the actress Mia Farrow posted on her blog. We are deeply saddened to learn about your loss.
Lin-Manuel Miranda said on Instagram, “I was too scared to look any of you in the eye from the stage when you invited me to perform at the White House in 2009.”
It wasn’t until I turned to see your mom’s beaming grin that I felt at ease and prepared to go.
