When Lucas’ parents gave him an ultimatum, he decided to seduce and marry Alice, the young maid. However, he continued his wild lifestyle until a brutal argument with Alice. He threw her and their baby out into the cold, while his parents tried to reason with him. That’s when a surprising person showed up at Lucas’ penthouse.
“Lucas, I can’t handle this anymore! You can’t just go out every night! We have a baby!” Alice yelled at her husband, who was out every night even though they had a newborn.
“Please, just shut up! Do you really think I married you for … uh … love?” Lucas said contemptuously. “Don’t be crazy!”
“What are you talking about? We went out together and we got married because we love each other,” Alice said, confused by her husband’s claims.
“Alice! Are you stupid? You were the maid in my house! Do you think I would fall in love with the MAID?” Lucas yelled at her.
“Why then? Why did we get married?”
“Because I had to!! I HAD TO! My parents said I had to settle down and have a child, or they would completely disinherit me!” Lucas yelled, as if his words weren’t the most hurtful thing he could say to his wife. But although it was heartbreaking, he was telling the truth.
Two years ago, Lucas’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. Johnson, had a serious talk with him. They were fed up with their son’s bachelor lifestyle. He was already 32 years old and hadn’t worked a day in his life. Admittedly, he held an important position in their company, but he never lifted a finger for it. Mr. Johnson was getting older and needed a strong successor, and Mrs. Johnson longed for grandchildren.
At that time, Alice had been working for the Johnsons for two years and was massively crushing on Lucas. She tried to hide it, but it was obvious to everyone, including him.
Therefore, during a serious talk, the Johnsons gave Lucas an ultimatum. He had to marry and start a family within a year, or he would lose his position in the company. Additionally, his parents would disinherit him and kick him out of the large penthouse.
Lucas was stuck. He didn’t know anyone he could marry so quickly who wouldn’t bother him, except the maid in their house. She was quiet, submissive, and completely willing. Alice believed his words and they started dating shortly thereafter. The Johnsons were skeptical about the relationship, but they were glad Lucas was finally behaving well.
He proposed to Alice just three months after they first went out, and they married immediately. Now they had a son, and his parents were overjoyed. They even bought an even bigger house for the family. And now that Alice was so focused on the baby, she didn’t notice what was happening right under her nose.
Lucas had never changed his habits. He was still a playboy, but he went about it more discreetly. The only thing Alice noticed was that Lucas was out almost every night. She decided to confront her husband.
And now, as he told her the shocking truth that their relationship had been a lie from the beginning, Alice didn’t know how to proceed.
“This is the truth! I was born with a silver spoon and was with the most beautiful women in the world. Did you think a maid in my parents’ house would pique my interest? Are you really that stupid? You were just the easiest solution to the problem! Besides, I wasn’t on business trips,” he said. “I was out with models, in Dubai, Fiji, Mallorca…”
In that moment, Alice began to cry, and Lucas looked at her with a humiliating gaze.
“Oh, now you’re crying. For God’s sake! You know what? I’m tired. Get out of my house now! I’ll be filing for divorce soon. I’ll say that it just didn’t work out between us. My parents have the grandchild they wanted now, and you mean nothing to them!” Lucas yelled, pointing to the front door.
“Fine!” Alice screamed through tears. “But I’m taking my son with me!”
“Whatever,” Lucas said dismissively.
Alice packed a small bag, the baby carrier, and drove off. She had a brand-new car that the Johnsons had given her for her last birthday, but she had nowhere to go.
She had grown up in an orphanage, and the Johnsons were her only family. The only place she could think of was the Johnson villa. But they would ask questions. Questions she didn’t want to answer.
Unfortunately, she had no other choice. Mrs. Johnson welcomed her, and Alice told her that she and Lucas had had a fight, but she didn’t give any details. The older woman understood the situation and said she could stay overnight. In fact, she was thrilled to spend more time with the baby.
“Don’t worry, Alice. Tomorrow we’ll go to the penthouse and bring my son to his senses,” Mr. Johnson said as they ate dinner. Alice just grinned. She wasn’t looking forward to returning there.
“Alice, I know you guys had a fight, but married couples do that all the time. Come on. Open the door and let’s go in,” Mrs. Johnson insisted at the front door of the penthouse. Alice didn’t want to go inside, but she had no choice. Mr. Johnson was also there, and they wanted to scold their son for the argument, even though they didn’t know exactly what had happened.
Alice finally took out her keys and opened the door. She saw that Lucas was talking to a man his age. He turned around, and something about him seemed familiar.
Suddenly Lucas spoke up in an awkward tone. “Here she is, George. This is my wife Alice and my son. You already know my father, of course.”
“George Finberg, my boy! How are you?” Mr. Johnson greeted the familiar stranger, and it seemed like they all knew each other. “Darling, may I introduce you to Henry Finberg’s son George.”
“Of course! Nice to meet you,” the older woman said.
But Alice hadn’t taken her eyes off her husband. He was sweating and acting strangely. At first, she thought he might be nervous now that his parents were there, but it was something else. He was worried about the presence of this familiar stranger in their house.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Johnson, and it’s an honor to meet you, Mr. Johnson. My father has always told me great things about you,” George said with a friendly smile, although he barely took his eyes off Alice.
“Your father is, of course, one of my oldest friends. But what are you doing here?” Mr. Johnson asked.
“Actually, I’m here to see Alice,” George revealed, and she frowned.
“What?” Alice asked, holding her baby tightly in her arms.
“Hello, my name is George, and I’ve been looking for you all my life,” he continued, shocking everyone around him.
“Why?” she asked, confused.
“Because you’re my sister. When you were little, a driver stole you from our house, and the police couldn’t find you. We’ve been searching for years. We hired private detectives, but they couldn’t find you. It wasn’t until I saw your picture in the newspaper. They announced the birth of your son and printed a picture. You look just like my mother … our mother,” he revealed, giving Alice a gentle look.
“Oh my God! George, are you serious? You’re telling me that my daughter-in-law is the daughter of my good friend? That’s wonderful news!” Mr. Johnson cheered happily. But Lucas was not happy about this news and seemed more nervous than ever.
Alice realized in that moment that the Finbergs were possibly just as wealthy as the Johnsons themselves. If they were good friends, that meant they were also business partners. Lucas was afraid of what Alice would do now.
“Actually, these aren’t such great news, Mr. Johnson. I actually came here last night, and what I heard … well, it was the most terrible thing I’ve ever heard. And I can’t believe what your son has done to my little sister,” George continued, looking seriously at Mr. Johnson.
“What do you mean? They just had a fight,” Mrs. Johnson interjected, but Mr. Johnson turned to Lucas, who was almost in the corner.
“You didn’t tell them what your husband said to you last night, Alice?” George asked her directly.
“Well, no. I didn’t have time. I was trying to process it, and now I’m trying to process what you just told us. Is it true? Am I your sister?” Alice asked, both delighted and astounded by the idea of having a real family.
“What did you say to Alice, Lucas?” Mr. Johnson asked his son sternly.
But Lucas shook his head, and George decided to tell the man the truth. When he was done, the Johnsons were shocked. The older woman began to cry, and Alice’s brother spoke up again.
“I heard her screaming right outside the front door. Well, I can’t let my little sister live in this environment anymore. Would you like to meet our parents, Alice? I can help you divorce this loser,” he said. “Oh, my father won’t be too pleased about this whole thing.”
Mr. Johnson pursed his lips angrily and gave his son one more devastating look. Lucas hadn’t said a word, and Alice couldn’t believe what a coward she had married. So she decided to take her life into her own hands now. “I would like to meet our parents. I hope they love their grandchild too.”
George smiled and nodded. “They will freak out. In a good way, of course.”
Alice followed George and waved awkwardly to the Johnsons, as she still held the baby in her arms.
Reuniting with her parents was bittersweet, but she loved having people in her life who cared about her. As predicted, Mr. Finberg was furious when George told him why Alice had married Lucas Johnson. He almost threatened to end business relations with him for good. But Alice persuaded him not to do so because Mr. and Mrs. Johnson had always been good to her.
A few weeks later, after she had gotten used to having parents and a real family, Alice filed for divorce and applied for sole custody of her child. She got custody because Lucas hardly fought for it. The Johnsons were allowed to visit her because they really had a nice relationship. They also made sure their relationship with the Finbergs got back on track. Mr. Johnson revealed that Lucas had been fired from the company. His parental financial aid was also cut.
In the end, Alice was happier than she had ever expected. She had a new family who adored her son. She never had to deal with her ex-husband’s terrible words again. She also took a little joy in the idea that Lucas had ruined his own life. But eventually, Alice pushed him out of her thoughts and moved on with her life.
What can we learn from this story?
Love can make us trust people too easily. Alice shouldn’t have trusted Lucas so quickly when they started dating. But love sometimes blinds us.
