1993: The Court Case
After “Problem Child 2,” Oliver was known as a top child actor. But did he act out in real life like his character in the movie? Universal Pictures thought so and sued him for $190,000 in 1993.
The producers claimed that Oliver and his mom went back on their word to do “Problem Child 2” for $80,000. Right before filming in 1991, his mom asked for $500,000, saying Oliver wouldn’t reprise his role without it. The studio said yes to avoid losing $4 million if the movie was canceled.
Oliver’s mother, Dianne Ponce, argued that Universal Pictures still owed him $350,000. She asserted that Oliver should get paid $1 million like his adult co-star John Ritter. Universal Pictures’ lawyer called Ponce a “stage mother” and insisted she was making unfair demands.
When the lawsuit was over, Oliver felt disconnected from the entertainment industry. He was too young to understand the details surrounding the suit, but old enough to feel he didn’t want to be part of the industry anymore. Yet, he kept at it for a few more years, appearing in minor roles.
1996: Leaving Hollywood
In 1996, Oliver made his last known appearance on screen as an uncredited Russian teenager in the movie “Eraser.” After this role, he disappeared from Hollywood, leading a life away from the public eye for the next 28 years.
His departure marked the end of an era for fans who had followed his career since his breakout role in “Problem Child.”

Life After Hollywood
After the success of the “Problem Child” films, there was a cartoon spin-off titled “Problem Child the Animated Series.” Produced, written, and edited by Glenn Turner for Universal Studios, this series aimed to capture the charm of the original movies.
The first episode aired on October 31, 1993, and the final episode on December 4, 1994. The series, produced by Universal Cartoon Studios, continues to be shown in certain markets, keeping the spirit of the “Problem Child” films alive. However, Oliver did not come back to voice Junior Healy.
But in the years following his departure from Hollywood, Oliver occasionally appeared in public, with photos surfacing over the years. These appearances gave fans a glimpse into his life post-fame.
In 2018, he shared fond memories of his time on set, particularly recalling his interactions with his co-stars. Oliver reminisced about John Ritter, describing him as a “sweetheart” who took him under his wing. “He was really nice to me,” Oliver said. “It’s a pity he’s no longer around; I would have loved to reconnect with him.”

He also had fond memories of Jack Warden, who played a grumpy character in “Problem Child 2” but was a sweetheart off-camera. Oliver shared a funny story about Gilbert Gottfried while filming a music video with the Beach Boys. He recalled him having the kind of crazy humor that kept things lively on set.

When asked if his parents approved scripts on his behalf, Oliver said his mother valued his opinion. She would ask if he wanted to read the script first. This respect for his input highlighted the supportive relationship he had with his family during his acting career.
Reasons for Leaving the Industry
The court case with Universal Pictures in 1993 was a turning point for Oliver. In the end, the studio won the lawsuit. These happenings contributed to his decision to leave the entertainment industry.

Reflecting on the case decades later, Oliver said, “I think it was a mutual breakup between me and the industry. I was kind of done with it anyway. I wanted a normal life.”
Many people might have wondered what it would be like to be a child star. But all Oliver wanted as a child star was to be a normal child leading a normal life. When the lawsuit was over, he decided to pursue that, but it came at a cost.
Overcoming Hardships
After losing the lawsuit to Universal Pictures, Oliver’s family faced significant financial hardships. The legal battle drained their resources, and their morale took a severe hit.
As their financial situation worsened, they were forced to stay with friends for a period. Reflecting on this tough time, Oliver said, “I want to say it was a good couple of years that we were just completely busted up.”
One of the most impactful losses during this period was their home—a seven-story house in Hacienda Heights with a canyon for a backyard and an observation tower. “My parents fought tooth and nail to keep the place, but it wasn’t meant to be,” Oliver recalled.
The sudden transition from a stable life to living with friends was jarring. “Essentially it was just normal life day-to-day and then suddenly that all gets broken up and ‘grab your [things], we’re going to stay with some friends,'” he narrated.
Leading and Enjoying a Normal Life
Despite the setbacks, Oliver admired people with normal lives and aspired to live similarly. He works in tech support and enjoys the quiet, regular existence he once yearned for. “I have a nine-to-five quiet existence. I’m happy with it,” he stated.

Oliver likes being out of the public eye and has echoed this sentiment on different occasions. Since leaving Hollywood, he has only made a few public appearances and done a handful of interviews. His “Problem Child” co-star Ivyann Schwan often posts pictures of him on social media.
In 2012, he attended one of the “Problem Child” cast reunions to benefit the John Ritter Foundation. There, he expressed his contentment with life away from Hollywood.

“I am grateful and always will be for the experiences,” he said before adding, “I’m quite happy with my life the way it is today. I have a decent job. I work hard. I have a beautiful girlfriend. We have three cats and a hamster. It’s a nice, quiet existence. I like it.”
In the late 2010s, he inadvertently ignored a message from his former co-star. Gottfried had reached out for an interview on his podcast.

Oliver later apologized, explaining, “I’d like to apologize for that. That was legit not blowing you off; that was just a whole bunch of other crazy [stuff] going on.”
Discussing his current life, Oliver remarked, “I’ve got the same stresses anyone else does. If everyone’s worrying about money, I’m no exception. I’ve got things I have to pay for. Life is normal—it’s fine. I’ve seen the top, I’ve seen the bottom, I know what both extremes are like. And honestly, if someone told me that I could go back to where I was before the lawsuit, I’d decline.”
He values his privacy and cherishes the ability to live without constant public scrutiny. “One of the things that I learned really young is how precious privacy is,” he said. “Picture going to see a movie with your friends and getting recognized and people not understanding that you just want to go see a movie.”
Oliver’s friends call him “PC,” and he enjoys the anonymity this nickname provides. While “Problem Child” is a significant part of his past, he doesn’t use it to define his present. “It’s a huge part of who I am, but it’s not something that I try to ride on,” he concluded.
