Prince Louis is 6! The youngest of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s royal brood turned another year older on April 23, though this year was probably a pretty quiet celebration. Mom Kate is still in the middle of treatment for cancer, so it’s not known what exactly the family will be doing to commemorate Louis’ special day. Kate did partake in her tradition of sharing a new portrait of Louis for his birthday when many weren’t sure if she would.
And if the past is any indication, there’s a good chance that Kate will be baking her littlest one a special birthday cake. Kate has talked about her love of baking her kids a cake for their birthdays, and it sounds like she really goes all out to make each one extra special, no matter how busy she might be.

Kate likes spending time in the kitchen.
“I love making the cake,” Kate said back in 2019 while appearing on A Berry Royal Christmas. “It’s become a bit of a tradition that I stay up ’til midnight with ridiculous amounts of cake mix and icing, and I make far too much. But I love it.”
This sounds so relatable — how many of us have stayed up late making a cake or cupcakes for our kids on their birthdays?
She wants to do the best possible job she can.
Kate may be an amateur baker, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t try. Last year, she shared her love for baking her kids’ birthday cakes with Great British Baking Show finalist Alice Fevronia and even asked for some tips to elevate the quality of her bakes. “The princess was actually asking a lot of baking tips like, ‘How did you get the buttercream so smooth?'” Alice explained to People. “She mentioned that she’d been up quite late on a couple of occasions trying to decorate the kids’ birthday cakes.”
She was taking the advice very seriously.
Apparently that’s not all Kate was curious about. Alice also revealed that Kate asked her “about how to get the sides of the cake straight and smooth.”
She shared, “I used to be a teacher, so I went into teacher mode. I was like, ‘Right, this is what you need to do.'”
Alice did also let slip that Kate is definitely the baker in the family. “The prince’s piping skills were less good than the princess’s, shall we say,” she confessed.
Kate brought back a beloved tradition for Prince Louis’ birthday.
Another beloved tradition started by the Princess of Wales is the annual birthday portrait she takes of each of her kids. She started with Prince George when he was young, and every year, people look forward to her commemorating her kids’ birthdays with a new picture. Prince Louis’ birthday portrait for 2024 is so cute, featuring him laying in the grass and smiling at his mom. You can even spot the missing tooth on the newly minted 6-year-old!
The portrait was a bit of a surprise.
Usually, the birthday portrait is released on the eve of the royal kid’s birthday, but this year it came on the actual day. No one was sure if there would be a portrait this year since Kate is still largely out of commission due to her cancer treatments. She has been mostly quiet since she revealed her diagnosis, but according to People, William and Kate wanted to release the picture to say thank you to well-wishers.
