After pushing it to the top of Netflix’s Top 10 list, fans of The Gentlemen are keen for a second series – but the creators will need to overcome a big obstacle to make it happen.

Set in the same world as Guy Ritchie’s 2019 movie, The Gentlemen series arrived on Netflix in March to rave reviews.

Starring Theo James as aristocratic Eddie, the series tells the story of what happens after he discovers the family estate he’s just inherited is home to an enormous weed empire.

Over the course of its eight episodes, The Gentlemen captivated viewers and earned itself an Audience Score of 86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, seemingly making it a natural choice for the commission of a second season.

Producer Marc Helwig has offered a glimmer of hope for new episodes as he told Deadline creators had ‘started that process’, adding: “There are some writers we’ve talked to, certainly lots of discussion with Guy about what he might want to do in a second season, what things to focus on.”

However, there’s one important factor that would need to be taken care of before a second season could get underway: the cast.

Cast member Giancarlo Esposito, who played Stanley Johnston in the series, told Digital Spy that ‘nothing was ever discussed of a second season’, and with a number of famous faces in the cast it’s not surprising that many of the stars now have different projects to focus on.

According to IMDb, James has two upcoming titles – The Monkey and David Copperfield – while Kaya Scodelario is set to appear in a mini-series titled Senna and a new movie called Apteros.

On top of that, series creator Ritchie is working on an untitled project set to release in 2025, while his next project, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, is due to be released in just a couple of weeks.

The various projects mean creators will have to find a time when cast members are able to reunite to work on a second series. But an insider told The Sun they’re hopeful they’ll be able to make it happen.

“It’s going to be quite a challenge getting the same actors back together, but Netflix chiefs are keen for a sequel,” they said.

“Another hurdle will be securing Guy for the series as he already has several movie projects in the pipeline this year.

“But the success of series one has already convinced them there’s huge potential for a follow-up.”

On top of that, James has hinted he’s keen for more to come for his character in The Gentlemen, as he told Netflix’s Tudum: “Eddie and Susie just signed the deal with the devil and they’re about to embark on a diabolical journey.”

Hopefully viewers will get to see that journey unfold!
