A man has been praised online after he left his wife alone at the airport as he boarded a plane without her – which presumably resulted in the biggest argument of his life.

A 47-year-old man hailing from the Pacific North West region of the United States has ignited a heated debate after he decided to board a plane without his wife, who had gone to get coffee, leaving her stranded at the airport while he jetted off to visit their daughter on the East Coast.

The incident was recounted in a Reddit post on the popular Am I the A**hole (AITA) subreddit, where the man, who opted to identify his family members using the pseudonyms ‘Jess’ and ‘Meg’, shared the bizarre circumstances.

“Let me start by saying that traveling with my wife is not a great experience,” he began. “I am very type A, I like to have everything organized and make sure that we get where we need to be early, especially when traveling. My wife is the opposite, very ‘go with the flow’ and ‘we will get there when we get there’. I do my best to meet in the middle, but not when traveling by plane.”

The man recounted a prior incident to provide context, where they were heading to their daughter’s college for a parents’ weekend.

“Our flight was at [10:00AM],” he explained. “Our airport isn’t huge, but not a tiny airport either. I told my wife that we needed to be at the airport 90 minutes early, and we live about 30 minutes away. This being said, I wanted to leave at the very latest by 8, since we would also need to park and walk a little bit. I, of course, got up at 6, to make sure everything was ready and accounted for.”

However, his wife’s reluctance to rise early led to a delay. He stated: “It took me attempting to wake her up 5 times before she eventually got up at 740 then wanted to make coffee, shower, and eat a bowl of cereal … let’s just say that we didn’t leave the house until 9. It ended up being busier at the airport than normal (likely due to many colleges having parents weekend) and it took so long to get through security that we missed our flight.”

Fast forward to their most recent trip when they were returning to help Jess move – a journey that involved two flights.

Upon landing at their connecting city, they had a mere 25 minutes to start boarding the next plane. The man recounted, “We had to take multiple rails to get from where we landed to our terminal. We got to our terminal and had about 15 minutes until our plane was set to board. My wife tells me that she wants to get coffee. There was a little market next to our terminal that sold hot food and coffee. I asked if she wanted me to go grab it for her. ‘No, I want Starbucks,’ she said. Well, Starbucks was a rail ride away, and a little bit of a walk. I told her we couldn’t do that; we didn’t have enough time.”

Despite his warnings, the wife ventured off to get her Starbucks coffee, assuring her husband she’d be back in time.

As the boarding groups were being called, she failed to return, prompting the man to make several calls in vain. Eventually, he was informed by a flight attendant that it was the last call, and he had to make a decision.

“I tried to plead with her to wait a couple of minutes, but she insisted that she couldn’t. So, I boarded the plane.”

He had no choice but to instruct his wife to purchase a new ticket, with plans to meet her at their daughter’s location.

When they reconnected at their daughter’s school, his wife appeared unphased but has been giving him the cold shoulder ever since.

People flocked to the comments to praise the man, as one person said: “Your wife is so selfish only cares about herself and what she wants and not about seeing your daughter. You warned her. I would have just left her the day before. So not only is she selfish she is acting like a child now as well. Honestly she needs to grow up.”

A second said: “You did the right thing. Does she not care about how it would’ve impacted your daughter? At least she had one parent with her. Your wife needs to grow up and learn how to be a responsible adult.”
